Controversy Over the Paleo Diet

Is there a Paleo Diet controversy? Everybody is talking about the Paleo Diet! Book stores are filled with Paleo Diet Books, celebrities swear by it, Dr. Oz has done several episodes on the diet. There’s no question that the Paleo diet is getting tons of attention. Once anything receives this much public attention there is bound to be controversy and the Paleo Diet is no exception.

Many people swear by the Paleo Diet and credit it with completely changing their lives. From healing illness to boosting energy and physical appearance there are many who claim nearly miraculous health benefits. To many this may seem too good to be true. We often learn that if something seems too good to be true then it probably is. For many people, however, their paleo diet weight loss results speak for themselves.

Paleo Diet skeptics often assert that it’s just another passing fad, something that will ultimately fail in the long run and then fade away like so many other diets. However, if you think on it for a while, people have eaten what we’d now call “paleo” meals every day for years without even realizing it. Simply naming this style of eating has caused some people to assume it’s another forced diet fad doomed to failure. Is it a fad to want to eat whole natural foods that our bodies have evolved to digest for optimum health? Modern processed foods with their unnatural dyes, preservatives, concentrated sugars, and other unnatural additives have lead us away from the healthier foods our bodies need and obesity and other physical ailments are worse than they’ve ever been.

Anyone who attempts to eat unprocessed natural foods is more than likely eating Paleo. Paleo is centered around eating foods which can be gathered from nature while avoiding processed foods. Noodles and breads are all processed grains while Milk is homogenized, pasteurized and often has unnatural additives. It is believed that milk and grains are not processed well by the human body and thus lead to weight gain and other ailments, but even beyond that think of the bulk of highly processed foods you find and inevitably the two most common ingredients are milk and grains. Avoid milk and grains and you will easily avoid most processed foods by default. This is why many on the paleo diet will allow an exception for milk with high quality sourcing. Organic milk from grass-fed cows is your best alternative to avoiding hormones and other unnatural additives.

If you’ve known any vegans or vegetarians they are essentially eating a variation of the Paleo diet. The major difference is that Paleolithic diets typically encourage more meat consumption to go along with the natural whole foods. Meat is the easiest way for your body to get plenty of proteins and amino acids that your body needs to give you energy, repair cellular damage and build fat-burning muscles.
